Point Guards
Jason Kidd is one of the best point guards in the history of the NBA. Kidd is always a pass first floor general, but he can score if need be. In 866 games, Kidd has averaged 37.4 minutes per game and could start to wear down any year now. Until he shows signs of that (and he didn’t last season), you’d have to rank him at the top of the point guards and the Nets at the top of the Atlantic Division. Kidd is not a great shooter (40.2% FG, 33.2% 3-pointers), but he is a clutch shooter and great free-throw shooter (77.9%). Kidd does so many things good on the court. He’s the #3 option on offense behind Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson, but he still has averaged 14.6 points over his career. Kidd isn’t afraid to go to the glass either and has averaged 6.5 rebounds per game over his career. Kidd excels at the point guard skills averaging a robust 9.2 assists per game and 2.0 steals per game. Every night that he suits up, he could get a triple-double.
The Nets hope they finally have found Kidd a good back-up that can give him a little break from time-to-time and eventually replace him if/when he slows down. The Nets were elated to see Connecticut guard Marcus Williams sitting there for them on draft night. Most draft experts had Williams ranked as the best point guard in the draft. Williams has the same skill-set as Kidd, except on a smaller scale.
