The New Jersey Nets appear to be in good shape at the point for 2010-11

27-year old Devin Harris didn’t play up to his ability last season. It will be interesting to see if Avery Johnson can coach Harris back up. Harris played in 64 games (61 starts) for the Nets last year and he averaged 34.7 minutes, 16.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He has now played in 409 games (275 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 27.5 minutes, 13.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game. With improved players around him I look for Harris to rebound this year for the Nets.

23-year old Jordan Farmar will be Harris’ back-up in 2010-11. Farmar played in 82 games (0 starts) for the Lakers last year and he averaged 18.0 minutes, 7.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He has now played in 301 games (2 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 18.1 minutes, 6.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Farmar is absolutely no threat to Harris’ starting job.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE NETS POINT GUARDS IN 2010-11: B

The New Jersey Nets sign Stephen Graham

The Nets have signed 28-year old shooting guard Stephen Graham to a 2-year deal. Graham played in 70 games (8 starts) for the Bobcats last season and he averaged 11.5 minutes, 4.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He has now played in 180 games (15 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 10.9 minutes, 4.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Graham will likely be sitting near the end of the bench in 2010-11 so don’t expect him to make much of a impact.

The New Jersey Nets sign Joe Smith

The Nets have signed 35-year old power forward Joe Smith. Smith played in 64 games (1 start) for the Hawks last season and he averged 9.3 minutes, 3.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He has now played in 1,014 games (616 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 26.6 minutes, 11.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. Smith will likely serve as the #3 PF for the Nets in 2010-11 behind Troy Murphy and rookie Derrick Favors. It never hurts to add a guy with Smith’s veteran know how to sit at the end of the bench.
