The New Jersey Nets need more out of their rookie crop

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Need to step up, Rookie Report, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 21 January 2011 at 5:53 pm

The Nets have recently inserted 19-year old rookie power forward Derrick Favors into the starting lineup to showcase him for a deal, because he certainly has not played nowhere near Kris Humphries’ level so far this year. Favors has played in 41 games (8 starts) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 19.0 minutes, 6.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Favors is shooting 55.1% from the floor which is pretty darn good but he needs to improve his free throw shooting as he is only hitting 60% of his shots from the charity stripe. 23-year old small forward Damion James will likely see a bump in P.T. when he returns from injury. James has played in 17 games (1 start) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 12.9 minutes, 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. 22-year old guard Ben Uzoh has been buried on the depth chart so far this year as he’s just been getting garbage time minutes for the Nets so far this year. Uzoh has played in 18 games (0 starts) so far this year and he is averaging 9.0 minutes, 2.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. The Nets need more out of these three guys, plain & simple.

Derrick Favors is leading a decent rookie crop for the New Jersey Nets

19-year old power forward Derrick Favors is on a quick rise for the Nets. He has played in 24 games (0 starts) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 19.0 minutes, 6.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. Favors is shooting 54.1% from the floor but only 59.7% from the free throw line. So the kid still has some things to work on but he’s been impressive so far this year for the Nets. 23-year old small forward Damion James was just inserted into the starting lineup when he broke his foot. James has played in 17 games (1 start) so far this year and he is averaging 12.9 minutes, 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. His shooting has been off so far as he is only shooting 35% from the floor and 61.1% from the free throw line so he needs to improve in those areas. 22-year old guard Ben Uzoh might start to get some P.T. due to the injuries the Nets have suffered lately. Uzoh has played in 7 games (0 starts) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 7.1 minutes, 1.9 points, 1.0 rebound and 0.7 assists per game but he is only shooting 25% from the floor so far this year.

The New Jersey Nets insert rookie Damion James into the starting lineup

The Nets have decided to replace Travis Outlaw at small forward with rookie Damion James. James has played in 16 games (0 starts) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 12.3 minutes, 3.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. James has only shot 33.3% from the floor so far this year and only 61.1% from the free throw line. James must be looking good in practice because he hasn’t played well enough to deserve a promotion. Travis Outlaw has played in 22 games (all starts) so far this year for the Nets and he is averaging 32.7 minutes, 10.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. The Nets expected more out of Outlaw and I’m sure he’s going to get another chance to start at some point unless James takes over.

UPDATE:  (12/13/2010) - James starting job at small forward was short lived.  He has underwent surgery on his right foot (which he broke) and he will be out indefinitely.  In his first NBA start he played 23 minutes for the Nets and he finished with 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 steal.

UPDATE II (12/13/2010) - James will be out the next 6-8 weeks due to the surgery he had.

The New Jersey Nets are taking is slow with their rookies so far

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Rookie Report, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at 3:17 pm

The Nets have a rookie class with a huge upside but they are taking it slow with them so far this year. 19-year old power forward Derrick Favors has a gigantic upside. He has played in 10 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Nets and he is averaging 20.2 minutes, 7.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. He is shooting 53.6% from the floor so far this year but only 59.3% from the free throw line. By the end of this season, Favors could be the starting power forward especially is he starts making more free throws. Damion James has played in 7 games (0 starts) for the Nets so far this year and he is averaging 7.9 minutes, 2.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He is only shooting 29.4% from the floor and 55.6% from the free throw line but that could be a result of his sporadic playing time. Ben Uzoh is a guard that’s buried on the depth chart. He has played in 1 game in which he didn’t score any points but got 2 rebounds in six minutes.

Terrence Williams finished the season strongly for the New Jersey Nets

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Rookie Report, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 16 April 2010 at 10:20 am

22-year old SF/SG Terrence Williams finished the season strong for the Nets. In March & April, Williams played in 22 games in which he averaged 31.2 minutes, 14.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Overall, this year Williams played in 78 games (9 starts) in which he averaged 22.6 minutes, 8.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Williams is looking like he will be a big part of the Nets’ future as long as he keeps his head on straight.
